Capital University sophomore R.G. Florey has been selected Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week, the league announced Monday, Oct. 22.
Florey, a team co-captain from Westerville, Ohio, recorded two goals and two assists last week to help vault the Crusaders (8-5-3, 3-3-1 OAC) to fifth place in the conference and a hold on the No. 5 seed in the OAC Tournament with just two matches remaining in the regular season.
"Having R.G. back from injury has been a big factor in us posting three straight wins," Capital coach Alan Yost. "His leadership is unmatched … he's the perfect example of a correlation between who you are off the field and who you are on the field. We're not the same team without him, he's an amazing person."
Against Marietta last Tuesday, Florey assisted twice on long passes to help Capital close out a 3-0 triumph at Marietta. The passes, one off a ball played over the defense and one on a direct kick, were the first assists of the year for Florey.
The midfielder struck twice on Saturday at Baldwin Wallace after the Crusaders trailed 2-0 more than 50 minutes into the contest. His first goal cut the deficit in half and his second, which came on a penalty kick, tied the affair in the 64th minute. Capital eventually scored again to take the lead for good and pick up a crucial victory over BW, a 2011 NCAA Tournament participant.
Florey is currently tied for the team lead with seven goals and has 16 points for the year, good for second on the team and tied for ninth in the OAC. He is the second player on the team to earn the weekly honor this season after junior Tim McCarthy (Dayton, Ohio) was tabbed on Oct. 1.
Each week, OAC coaches and sports information directors nominate student-athletes for each sport in season for the award.
