COLUMBUS – The Capital University men's soccer team sustained a decimating offensive attack Sunday, defeating Emory & Henry 5-0 in non-conference action on the second and final day of the Fort Rapids Invitational at Bernlohr Stadium.
The win was the first as a head coach for Alan Yost, who is in his first season at the helm for Capital.
The Crusaders (1-1) dominated possession during the contest as five different players registered goals. Senior Al Argyris (Centerville, Ohio) led Capital, which fell against Wittenberg in its season opener on Friday, with three points on one goal and one assist.
"We had a pretty disappointing home opener,"Argyris said. "We came out today and wanted to get back at it with a revenge-type attitude. The game plan that Coach Yost had for us worked, and we scored early and kept going at them the whole game."
Capital outshot the Wasps (0-2) by a 16-3 advantage and held a 7-4 margin on corner kicks.
Argyris started the scoring in the 15th minute, taking a pass from freshman Chris Mir-Salimi (Strongsville, Ohio), then dribbling around a defender and chipping the ball into opposite corner.
Just over four minutes later, sophomore Derek Cox (Hilliard, Ohio) took a beautiful touch pass from Argyris and finished past the keeper.
"I was trying to show for the midfielders," Argyris, a forward, said. "That's one thing I didn't do enough of (against Wittenberg). I was really disconnected … but today the forwards connected to the midfielders, and it showed on the scoreboard."
The Crusaders continued as the aggressor in the second half as sophomore Jesus Villarroel (Lewis Center, Ohio) tallied his first goal as a Crusader, rebounding a shot by freshman Mario Suarez (Strongsville, Ohio) just under 30 seconds into the period.
Junior Zach Inman (Groveport, Ohio; at right) rebounded a free kick for a goal in the 60th, and junior Danny Parsons (Waynesville, Ohio) capped the scoring effort after taking a pass over the top from freshman Zach Monhollen (Pickerington, Ohio).
Junior goalkeepers Bob Weisgarber (Columbus, Ohio) and Dylan Beck (Wharton, Ohio) combined for the shutout. Weisgarber registered one save.
The Crusaders return to the field Wednesday at 5 pm for a non-conference match against Denison at Bernlohr Stadium.
With a number of difficult non-league matchups remaining, Capital players and coaches know there is still plenty of room for improvement.
"Defensively, we're still a little slow in pressuring the ball," Argyris said. "We can't give them the space to get shots and play through balls.
"We also need to keep going to the goal and not giving up. As long as we keep the intensity up and not let down after a goal or two, I think we'll be OK."
