2013 OAC Preseason Outdoor Track and Field Polls
The Capital University men's track and field team has been selected to finish ninth in the Ohio Athletic Conference by the league's coaches in the 2013 OAC Preseason Outdoor Track and Field Polls, the conference announced Wednesday, March 20.
The Crusaders placed ninth at the OAC Indoor Championships in late February, posting 34 points, just two behind eighth-place Muskingum. Only 14 points separated the teams finishing in sixth through ninth place.
Junior Joshua Woods (Marysville, Ohio) placed in the top four in three individual events and one relay. He posted All-OAC performances in the 200-meter dash, where he finished second with a program-record mark of 22.41, and the triple jump with a leap of 45-09.75, good for second place.
Other individual point scorers at the indoor meet include junior Michael Beurer (Whitmore Lake, Mich.), who placed eighth in the weight throw with a mark of 46-10.25, junior Cory Smith (Bucyrus, Ohio), who finished seventh in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.64, and freshman Ed Wigton (Lucas, Ohio), who ran the 1-mile run in 4:28.57, good for eighth.
At last season's outdoor championships, Capital placed 10th with 22 points. Smith (javelin), Woods (200-meter dash/triple jump), senior Mitch Auchmuty (discus), sophomore Travon Bodrick (long jump/triple jump) and senior Erik Barenwald (shot put) were among individual placers at the meet. Woods would go on to qualify for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships in the long jump.
Defending outdoor champion and 2013 indoor champion Mount Union earned seven of the nine first-place votes and received 63 points, 10 ahead of John Carroll, which tallied one first-place vote. Ohio Northern garnered the other first-place vote and finished in third with 47.
