Capital University seniors Emma McCarron and Erik Barenwald were named Ohio Athletic Conference Track and Field Athletes of the Week for the week ending April 7, the league announced Monday.
McCarron was tabbed OAC Women's Track Athlete of the Week, while Barenwald garnered OAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week accolades. Both student-athletes set program records at the Marv Frye Invitational at Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday.
McCarron, a native of Mansfield, Ohio, set school records in both the 1,500-meter run and the 5,000-meter run. She won the 5,000 with a mark of 17:52.30, the first sub-18 minute time in program history, and placed third in the 1,500 with a time of 4:48.46.
A two-time NCAA Championship qualifier in cross country, McCarron has carried that performance over to track, winning the OAC individual title in the 1-mile indoor race twice and the 3,000-meter indoor run once. She currently owns the 11th-best 3,000-meter steeplechase time (11:13.20) in all of NCAA Division III.
Barenwald, a Bainbridge, Ohio, native, placed in the top three in two events and set a school record in another. He posted a school-record toss of 138-07 in the hammer throw, and was the runner-up in the shot put (51-08.50) and the third-place finisher in the discus throw (143-06). Barenwald's shot put mark is currently the 18th-best in the nation.
The Crusaders compete this Saturday at the All-Ohio Championships at Ohio Wesleyan. The two-day OAC Championships begin on April 26.
Each week, OAC coaches and sports information directors nominate student-athletes for each sport in season for the award.
