Capital University freshman Ed Wigton will compete in the 1,500-meter run at the 2013 USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships from June 19-23 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Wigton, a distance runner from Lucas, Ohio, qualified for the event with a school-record time of 3:55.50, a mark that bested a 42-year-old record in the event, on Monday at the Ron Althoff Final Qualifier at Ohio Wesleyan.
The championships, which are to be held at Track Central USA, host the top track and field athletes between the ages of 16 and 19. Top finishers in each event will compete for the United States in Medellin, Colombia, from August 23-25.
Greater Des Moines and Drake University will serve as co-hosts of the event.
Wigton is a member of both the cross country and track and field teams at Capital. He is a part of the men's distance medley relay team that holds the indoor school record in the event with a time of 10:41.57.
In the fall, Wigton was one of four Crusaders to compete in the NCAA Men's Cross Country Great Lakes Regional.
