Senior Emma McCarron (Mansfield, Ohio) continued her tremendous start to the 2012 season by recording the fastest women's cross country time in Capital University history with a mark of 18:34.6 at the Otterbein Invitational in Westerville, Ohio.
McCarron's impressive time Saturday, which was good for a second-place finish overall, only adds to her legacy as one of the Crusaders' finest runners in school history. She was a 2011 NCAA Championships qualifier and is a two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference runner. McCarron was named OAC Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week after finishing fourth overall at the team's first meet on Sept. 8.
When asked about what it means to have the all-time time's record, McCarron was humble in her response.
"I don't know honestly, I never think about that," McCarron said. "Everyone just ran so well today and it was so awesome to see the team perform the way they did. It's an amazing accomplishment and something I have been after for a while."
In large part to the efforts of McCarron and sophomore Jessie Knoll (Willard, Ohio) 19:11.7, the women's team was able to garner a fifth-place finish out of 12 competing universities Saturday.
Also placing for the women's team were sophomore Samantha Watts (LaGrange, Ohio) 21:31.0, senior Jess Cooper (Springfield, Ohio) 21:36.1, and juniors Shelby Rohr (Nova, Ohio) 22:07.1 and Megan Brown (Cleveland, Ohio) 24:38.9.
The men's team took home a sixth-place finish, paced again by senior Bret Nehrenz (Seville, Ohio) and his leading Crusader time of 28:11.7. Finishing right behind Nehrenz was fellow senior Dustin Iacovone (Westerville, Ohio) with a mark of 28:51.1.
Juniors Mitch Stith (Sunburry, Ohio) 28:57.9, Erik Morris (Cincinnati, Ohio) 29:06.6, freshmen Phil Baer (Westerville, Ohio) 29:07.2,and Kyle Arvan (Gladstone, Michigan) 29:09.4 finished with near identical marks as they all crossed the finish line within 12 seconds of each other.
The next group of Crusaders across the finish line were the freshman trio of Ed Wigton (Lucas, Ohio) 29:31.8, Paul Blanchard (Howard, Ohio) 29:32.8 and Jeremy Rohr (Nova, Ohio) 29:37.3, all finishing under the 30-minute mark.
Also placing for the Crusaders were seniors Ben Herbert (Bainbridge Township, Ohio) 30:21.7 and Zach Heyne (New Castle, Ind.) 30:54.4.
The cross country teams return to action next Saturday, Sept. 29, at the All-Ohio Championships in Cedarville, Ohio.
