The Capital University cross country teams competed in their first official meet today at the Ohio Wesleyan Invitational in Delaware, Ohio.
The Capital men's team finished 11th with an average time of 28:50.72 in the 8-kilometer race, while the Crusader women came in 10th at an average of 21:49.00 in the 5K.
Senior Bret Nehrenz (Seville, Ohio; at left) led the way for the men's team, finishing 64th out of 152 athletes with a time of 28:30.88. Close behind Nehrenz were senior Dustin Iacovone (Westerville, Ohio) and junior Mitch Stith (Sunbury, Ohio) who also finished in the 28th minute at 66th and 67th, respectively, with near identical times.
Three Capital freshmen were able to finish under the 30-minute mark in their collegiate debuts as Phil Baer (Westerville, Ohio) in 29:02.70, Kyle Arvan (Gladstone, Mich.) in 29:13.13, and Ed Wigton (Lucas, Ohio) in 29:33.35 all finished within 32 seconds of each other. With nearly one half of the roster made up of freshmen, Saturday's competition should be a sure indicator that there are more things to come from the class of 2016.
Also placing for the men's team were junior Erik Morris (Cincinnati, Ohio) in 29:24.27, freshman Jeremy Rohr (Nova, Ohio) in 30:28.09, senior Zach Heyne (New Castle, Ind.) in 31:09.87 and freshman Paul Blanchard (Howard, Ohio) in 31:28.51
On the women's side, senior Emma McCarron (Mansfield, Ohio) ran her way to a top-five finish out of 142 competitors with a time of 19:08.9. McCarron's fourth-place time Saturday was good enough for the third-fastest time in school history. The 2011 NCAA qualifier's finish is her third overall placement on the all-time list as she also holds the second and fifth overall slots in Capital women's cross country history.
Sophomore Jessi Knoll (Willard, Ohio; at right) placed second on the team with a 29th overall finish in a time of 20:24.6.
Sophomore Samantha Watts (LaGrange, Ohio) 22:22.4, senior Jess Cooper (Springfield, Ohio) 23:19.9, juniors Shelby Rohr (Nova, Ohio) 23:49.2 and Megan Brown (Cleveland, Ohio) 26:32.4 rounded out Capital finishers.
Both cross country teams will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 22, at Otterbein. Competition is scheduled to begin at 10:45 a.m. in Westerville, Ohio.
