Kunle Lawson, who enters his second year at Capital University, will now serve as the director of cross country and track & field, interim director of athletics Steve Bruning announced this week.
Lawson recently completed his first season as head track & field coach at Capital. In 2011-12, he led the Crusader women to fifth-place finishes at the Ohio Athletic Conference Indoor Championships and the OAC Outdoor Championships, while helping the men finish in 10th place in the same meets. Under Lawson's tutelage, junior Josh Woods qualified for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships in the long jump. The two teams combined to set 15 new records during the indoor and outdoor campaigns.
"Given the strong results and progress of our track & field programs this year, we are fully confident in Coach Lawson's ability to take on the additional responsibility of our cross country programs," Bruning said. "We feel integrating these responsibilities allows for more consistency in the development of our student-athletes in the two sports, which are very closely tied here at Capital."
Lawson has more than 15 years of experience as a student-athlete and coach at the collegiate level. Prior to Capital, he served for four years as assistant track & field/cross country coach at the University of Richmond, where he mentored several conference champions and a handful of regional and national qualifiers in a variety of events.
Lawson was a two-time Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) champion in the discus during his four-year career at Lynchburg (Va.), where he graduated in 1997 with a bachelor's in business management. Lawson also earned a bachelor's in exercise physiology from Lynchburg in 2005 and a master's in coaching education from Ohio University in 2007.
