COLUMBUS – The Capital University softball team played a near perfect game and followed with a late-inning defeat Sunday, splitting a pair of games against Wilmington in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Clowson Field.
The Crusaders (21-14 overall, 6-7 OAC) took the first game 4-0 before the Quakers (14-20, 5-9) scored twice in their last at-bat to win 5-3 in the nightcap.
With the split, Capital drops to sixth place in the standings, one-half game behind Muskingum for fourth place and the final spot in the OAC Tournament.
The two games also represented the home finale of seniors Nikki Franz (Vandalia, Ohio) and Jessica Stoltz (Englewood, Ohio). The two were recognized in a short ceremony prior to the second game.
In the opener, freshmen pitchers Brooke Billings (Clyde, Ohio) and Alyssa Patznick (Newark, Ohio) combined for a five-hit shutout. Billings tossed the first four innings, while Patznick (13-5) picked up the win, striking out five while working the final three frames.
The game remained at 0-0 until the bottom of the fifth, when an infield single by sophomore Courtney Dingess (Johnstown, Ohio) plated freshman Kaitlin Baldogo (Grove City, Ohio), who pinch ran for Patznick. Junior Lexi Majoy (Huron, Ohio; at right) doubled the Capital advantage three batters later, knocking in Dingess on a sharp single up the middle.
The Crusaders doubled up their lead again in the bottom of the sixth on a colossal two-run home run to left by freshman Maura Rose (Williamsport, Pa.) that plated Stoltz.
Rose and Dingess finished with two hits apiece to lead the offense as all nine starters in the lineup reached base at least once in the contest.
In the second affair, Wilmington's Kerri Cunagin broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the seventh with a two-run homer, her second long ball of the game, to give the Quakers a 5-3 advantage.
Capital threatened in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with one out, but was unable to push the tying runs across.
Dingess and freshman Kelsey Swain (Pickerington, Ohio) registered two hits apiece to lead the Crusaders, while Rose knocked her second two-run homer of the twin bill in the bottom of the fourth to tie the contest at 3-3. Swain knocked in the other run with an infield hit in the third.
Sophomore pitcher Jessica Montgomery (Newark, Ohio) dropped to 6-7 with the loss, tossing the final three innings after relieving Patznick to start the fifth. Billings started and pitched the first two frames of the game.
Capital resumes OAC play Wednesday at first-place Ohio Northern. First pitch of the scheduled doubleheader is set for 3:30 p.m. in Ada.
