The Capital University softball team was unable to continue its undefeated Ohio Athletic Conference run Friday, falling in consecutive games at Marietta.
The Crusaders (17-8 overall, 3-2 OAC), who entered the day having won 12 of their last 13 games, were edged 5-4 in Game 1 before dropping the nightcap by a 9-4 score.
In the opener, Capital nearly tied the game in the top of the seventh after a double by junior Lexi Majoy (Huron, Ohio) scored a run. Freshman Tyler Tull (Brewster, Ohio) came on to run for Majoy, but was left in scoring position after the Pioneers (14-10, 4-4) set down the next two hitters.
Freshman pitcher Alyssa Patznick (Newark, Ohio) dropped to 10-2 on the year with the loss, scattering 10 hits over six innings of work. Patznick, Majoy, sophomore Courtney Dingess (Johnstown, Ohio) and freshman LeAnna Cotton (Okeechobee, Fla.) each contributed with two hits to lead the Crusaders.
In the second contest, the Pioneers tallied five times in the second inning and added a sixth run in the third to jump out to a large lead. Capital responded with two in the fourth on back-to-back run-scoring hits by senior Jessica Stoltz (Englewood, Ohio) and Patznick.
Marietta retook control of the affair with three more in the bottom of the fifth for a commanding lead. In the top of the seventh, Stoltz and Patznick struck again with consecutive RBI hits, but the two-out rally was short-lived as the Pioneers retired the next hitter with the bases loaded to wrap up the sweep.
Sophomore pitcher Jessica Montgomery (Newark, Ohio) moved to 6-4 on the season with the loss, tossing 1 2/3 innings before being relieved by freshman Brooke Billings (Clyde, Ohio), who was then relieved by Patznick in the fifth.
Majoy and junior Devan Boggs (West Jefferson, Ohio) joined Stoltz and Patznick with two hits apiece to lead Capital, which had 10 hits but left 10 women on base, including six in the last two innings.
The Crusaders return back to non-conference play Monday at Transylvania. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 3:30 p.m. in Lexington, Ky.
