COLUMBUS – The Capital University softball team won its league opener in walk-off fashion against Heidelberg Wednesday, and the second game was called in the fifth inning due to darkness in Ohio Athletic Conference action at Clowson Field.
The Crusaders (12-5 overall, 1-0 OAC) won the first of the two scheduled affairs by a 6-5 score in 10 innings. Freshman Brooke Billings (Clyde, Ohio; at right) provided the heroics with an infield hit to send the winning run home from third.
Heidelberg (9-7, 0-1) led the second contest by a 10-4 margin entering the top of the fifth, but conditions were too dark to continue. The game is a no-contest and will not be resumed or made up.
Freshman Alyssa Patznick (Newark, Ohio) pitched all 10 innings of the first game to earn her eighth victory of the season against no losses. The right-hander scattered eight hits and struck out nine in the effort.
Juniors Devan Boggs (West Jefferson, Ohio), Lexi Majoy (Huron, Ohio) and freshman Kelsey Swain (Pickerington, Ohio) each tallied two hits to lead Capital. Boggs posted two runs batted in, while Swain scored twice.
Capital got on the board first in the bottom of the second when Majoy scored on a passed ball. After the 'Berg took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third, Capital responded in the bottom half when freshman Nicole George (Clyde, Ohio) homered to left to tie the game.
Heidelberg responded yet again with three in the top of the fourth to take a 5-2 advantage. The Crusaders responded with one run in the bottom of the fourth as Patznick posted a run-scoring single up the middle.
Boggs tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with a clutch, two-out, two-run, opposite-field homer, her fifth of the year, to tie the game at 5-5. Neither team threatened again until the 10th, when Capital loaded the bases with no one out to set up Billings' big hit.
The Crusaders left 12 women on base during the game, compared to four for the 'Berg.
The Crusaders continue their home stand this Saturday against John Carroll. First pitch of the scheduled doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m. at Clowson Field.
