COLUMBUS – The Capital University softball team started its 2012 home schedule on the right note Monday, taking two games against Bethany (W.Va.) in convincing fashion in a non-conference doubleheader at Clowson Field.

The Crusaders (11-5), who have won six straight games and seven of their last eight, defeated the Bison 9-1 in each contest, ending the first in six innings and the second in five by the eight-run mercy rule. The team was solid in all facets of the game, including the offense, which clubbed four home runs for the day.

"Our hitting is growing since we returned from Maryland just over a week ago," Capital coach Nan Payne said. "We are a powerful team … it's just a matter of our players believing in themselves."

In the opener, Capital pounced on Bethany (3-10) right off the bat as junior Lexi Majoy (Huron, Ohio) homered to deep center field to give the team a 2-0 advantage.

Majoy finished with three runs batted in, a team high. Junior Devan Boggs finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, while freshman LeAnna Cotton (Okeechobee, Fla.) knocked a pinch-hit, two-run homer as part of the Crusaders' five-run sixth inning.

Freshman pitcher Alyssa Patznick (Newark, Ohio) pushed her record to 7-0, allowing just one run on six hits while pitching all six innings.

"She's growing each game and making tremendous strides," Payne said. "Coach Tharp is doing a great job with the pitching staff, and we're showing faith and confidence in them."

Freshman Nicole George (Clyde, Ohio) ended the game in the sixth with a two-out single up the middle to score Boggs.

In the second game, Capital scored eight runs over the first three innings and ended the game in the bottom of the fifth on a Boggs opposite field homer.

The highlight of the game came in the bottom of the third, however, as freshman Maura Rose (Williamsport, Pa.; at right) hit a grand slam down the left field line to increase the Crusaders' advantage to 8-1.

Sophomore pitcher Jessica Montgomery (Newark, Ohio) earned the complete-game win, surrendering one run on four hits over five innings to move to 3-3 on the season.

Boggs, Majoy and sophomore Courtney Dingess (Johnstown, Ohio) each provided two hits. Dingess scored twice and knocked in one, while Majoy registered a pair of RBIs.

The Crusaders begin Ohio Athletic Conference play this Wednesday against Heidelberg. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 3:30 p.m. at Clowson Field.
