COLUMBUS – The Capital University softball team received a pair of stellar pitching performances and were opportunistic offensively Wednesday, taking a pair of games against Baldwin-Wallace in Ohio Athletic Conference action at Clowson Field.

With their 7-1 and 2-1 victories, the Crusaders (20-9 overall, 5-2 OAC) currently stand tied for second place in the conference, just 2.5 games behind first-place Ohio Northern. The team also reached the 20-win mark, the 14th time that's happened in 14 seasons under coach Nan Payne.

In the opener, pitcher Alyssa Patznick (Newark, Ohio) continued her outstanding freshman campaign with her 12th win of the year. Patznick, who retired the first 16 hitters she faced, surrendered just one hit and one unearned run while striking out six in the complete-game effort.

Capital put up plenty of runs to support its young hurler, scoring in each of the last five frames to put away the Yellow Jackets (15-11, 4-4). Junior Devan Boggs (West Jefferson, Ohio) led the balanced attack with three hits, a run scored and an RBI, while freshman Maura Rose (Williamsport, Pa.) hit a two-run homer, her third of the season, in the fourth inning.

Sophomore Courtney Dingess (Johnstown, Ohio) and freshman LeAnna Cotton (Okeechobee, Fla.) also knocked in runs for the Crusaders, who pounded out 12 hits in the contest and took advantage of four Baldwin-Wallace errors.

Freshman pitcher Brooke Billings (Clyde, Ohio; at left) was the story of the second game for Capital, scattering four hits over seven innings while striking out five. Billings, who hadn't made a start all season long, moved to 2-2 with the victory.

With two hits apiece, junior Lexi Majoy (Huron, Ohio) and freshman Kelsey Swain (Pickerington, Ohio) were the main offensive contributors in the nightcap. Majoy led off the bottom of the second with a deep home run to left to give the Crusaders a 1-0 advantage.

After the Yellow Jackets responded to tie the game in the top of the third, Swain gave Capital its lead right back with a two-out single up the middle to knock in freshman Nicole George (Clyde, Ohio).

Neither team found its offensive groove after that, as the clubs combined to leave just three runners on base over the last 3 1/2 frames.

Capital resumes conference play this Saturday at home against Muskingum. First pitch of the twin bill at Clowson Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
