The Capital University softball team won big before being edged Monday, winning one and losing one in a doubleheader at Transylvania in non-conference action at Lexington, Ky.

The Crusaders (18-9 overall), who concluded the non-conference portion of their schedule Monday, defeated the Pioneers 11-0 in five innings in the opener before falling 7-6 in the nightcap.

Capital slugged 10 hits in the opener and scored 10 runs over the final two innings to put away Transylvania (14-14-1). Freshman pitcher Alyssa Patznick (Newark, Ohio), the reigning OAC Position Player of the Week after a stellar hitting performance last week, picked  up her 11th win of the season, allowing just two Pioneer hits over five innings.

Junior Lexi Majoy (Huron, Ohio; at right) led a balanced Crusader offense with two hits, two runs scored and two runs batted in. Senior Jessica Stoltz (Englewood, Ohio) and sophomore Courtney Dingess (Johnstown, Ohio) registered two hits apiece, while junior Devan Boggs (West Jefferson, Ohio) and freshman Kelsey Swain (Pickerington, Ohio) each knocked in a pair.

Stoltz's RBI on a fielder's choice in the second proved to be all Patznick needed, but Capital added plenty of insurance with six runs in the fourth. The frame featured run-scoring hits by Majoy, Dingess and freshman catcher Jamie Dean (Mechanicsburg, Ohio).

In Game 2, the Crusaders jumped out to a 5-2 lead but Transylvania scored five unanswered runs to take a 7-5 lead through five innings.

Freshman Nicole George (Clyde, Ohio) hit her team-leading ninth homer of the year with two outs in the seventh to cut the Capital deficit in half, but the Pioneers retired the next hitter to clinch the victory.

George finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, while Stoltz contributed with a two-out, two-run single during the Crusaders' five-run third frame.

Patznick, who relieved starting pitcher Jessica Montgomery (Newark, Ohio) with one out in the third, dropped to 11-3 with the loss.

The Crusaders return to Ohio Athletic Conference play for good Wednesday against Baldwin-Wallace. First pitch of the scheduled doubleheader is set for 3:30 p.m. at Clowson Field.
