COLUMBUS – The Capital University softball team unleashed a near perfect combination of extra-base hitting and stellar pitching Saturday, sweeping John Carroll in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Clowson Field.
The Crusaders (14-5 overall, 3-0 OAC) won the first game 6-1 before posting a 6-0 victory in Game 2. Capital, which entered last week ranked fifth in the nation in home runs, hit four long balls in the two contests to run its total to 24 on the season and extended its winning streak to nine.
"As a staff, we brought some power hitting drills back from a practice at Michigan, and we do them in every one of our practices here," Capital coach Nan Payne said. "We have power-hitting kids, and they're doing it in every game."
The Crusaders also received fantastic, complete-game pitching performances in each game. Freshman Alyssa Patznick (Newark, Ohio) and sophomore Jessica Montgomery (Newark, Ohio; at right) held the Blue Streaks (13-9, 0-4) in check all afternoon.
"Alyssa's strength is her speed and mound presence, and she's just been doing a great job all season," Payne said. "With Jessica, it's about ball movement and changing speeds. When she's on, not many teams can touch her."
In the first game, the Crusaders tallied four times in the bottom of the first to take an early advantage. After junior Devan Boggs (West Jefferson, Ohio) led off with an opposite-field homer, her sixth of the season, junior Lexi Majoy (Huron, Ohio) hit a three-run shot, the first of her two home runs in the contest.
Majoy (at left) hit her second of the game in the bottom of the fifth, plating sophomore Courtney Dingess (Johnstown, Ohio) to give Capital a 6-2 lead.
Patznick (9-0) stranded 10 John Carroll runners to remain unbeaten on the year.
Freshman Kelsey Swain (Pickerington, Ohio) added two hits to the Crusaders' potent offensive attack.
In the second game, Capital scored in each of the first three innings to jump out to a 5-0 lead, giving Montgomery, who faced the minimum number of hitters through the first 5 2/3 innings, plenty of breathing room to pick up her fourth win and second shutout of the season.
Boggs finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored, while freshman LeAnna Cotton (Okeechobee, Fla.) was 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs scored. Majoy and senior Jessica Stoltz (Englewood, Ohio) added two RBIs apiece.
The Crusaders close out their home stand Monday against Thomas More. First pitch of the twin bill is slated for 3:30 p.m. at Clowson Field.
