COLUMBUS – The Capital University softball team saw its nine-game winning streak come to an end Monday, but recovered in the second game to earn a split against Thomas More (Ky.) in a non-conference doubleheader at Clowson Field.

After falling 3-2 in the first game, the Crusaders (15-6 overall) took an early lead and held on for a 5-4 victory in Game 2.

In the second game, Capital generated four first-inning hits, matching its total from the first game, and scored all five runs over the first four innings.

Pitchers Jessica Montgomery (Newark, Ohio) and Alyssa Patznick (Newark, Ohio) held off a sixth-inning rally by the Saints (13-11), leaving the tying run in scoring position. Montgomery, a sophomore, went 5 2/3 innings and moved to 5-3 on the year with the win, while Patznick, a freshman, tallied her first career save.

Junior Devan Boggs (West Jefferson, Ohio), sophomore Courtney Dingess (Johnstown, Ohio; at left) and freshman Kelsey Swain (Pickerington, Ohio) registered two hits and one RBI apiece. Junior Lexi Majoy (Huron, Ohio) also knocked in a run for the Crusaders.

Dingess scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the bottom of the fourth, scoring on her RBI triple when the throw to the plate went over the head of the Thomas More catcher.

In the opening contest, the Saints scored three in the first two innings and held Capital scoreless until the bottom of the seventh, when freshman Nicole George (Clyde, Ohio) knocked in Dingess with a two-run homer, her team-leading seventh of the season.

The Crusaders, who were no-hit until Majoy singled to lead off the bottom of the fifth, put a runner on with one out, but were unable to move the tying run across the plate.

Patznick (9-1) took her first loss of the season, scattering five hits in seven innings while striking out eight. Capital recorded just four hits in the contest. Other than George, Dingess, Majoy and Swain were the only others to register hits.

The Crusaders begin a three-date road swing Wednesday at Mount St. Joseph. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 3:30 p.m. in Cincinnati, Ohio.
