The Capital University softball team fell behind early and was unable to recover Wednesday, falling 14-2 in five innings at 25th-ranked Ohio Northern in an Ohio Athletic Conference affair in Ada, Ohio.

With the setback, the Crusaders (21-15 overall, 6-8 OAC) fall one game behind fourth-place Muskingum for the final spot in the OAC Tournament with just two to play. Capital concludes regular season play at third-place Otterbein on Saturday.

The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was canceled due to inclement weather.

After the Polar Bears (23-8, 13-2) tallied three times in the bottom of the first, the Crusaders responded with two runs in the top of the second on a two-out, two run double by junior Devan Boggs (West Jefferson, Ohio; at right).

Ohio Northern blew the game open in the bottom half of the frame with eight runs on six hits and one Capital error. The Polar Bears scored three more times in the third and won by mercy rule in the fifth after holding the Crusaders scoreless after the second.

Boggs and freshman Kelsey Swain (Pickerington, Ohio) led Capital with a pair of hits each.

Freshman starting pitcher Brooke Billings (Clyde, Ohio) dropped to 2-3 with the loss. Sophomore Jessica Montgomery (Newark, Ohio) and freshman Alyse Bowling (Magnolia, Ohio) each came on in relief of Billings.

The Crusaders' twin bill at Otterbein is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start in Westerville.
