The Capital University softball team played in two very different games Thursday, splitting the non-conference contests on its second-to-last day at the National Training Center Spring Games in Clermont, Fla.
The Crusaders (3-3 overall) started their day with a thrilling 2-1 victory in eight innings over Augustana (Ill.). Junior Katie Neely (Sugar Grove, Ohio; at right) posted the walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth to secure the victory.
In the second game, junior Devan Boggs (West Jefferson, Ohio) was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate and achieved a rare offensive feat, hitting for the cycle in Capital's 20-12 loss in six innings against Cornell (4-2). The two-time all-region shortstop singled, doubled, tripled and homered while knocking in four runs to lead the offense and add another accomplishment to her already stellar resume.
In the first game, freshman pitcher Alyssa Patznick (Newark, Ohio) tossed a shutout until the top of the seventh inning, when the Vikings (8-2) tallied to tie the game at 1-1.
Neely's heroics in the bottom of the eighth gave Patznick the victory and snapped Augustana's eight-game winning streak.
Freshman Kelsey Swain (Pickerington, Ohio) led the offense with a 2-for-3 performance, while classmate Nicole George (Clyde, Ohio) homered in the second frame to give the Crusaders their first lead.
Against Cornell, Capital led 7-0 after 2 1/2 innings, but the Rams scored 20 times over the next four innings, ending the game with four runs in the bottom of the sixth due to the mercy rule.
In total, Cornell tallied 17 hits, while the Crusaders posted 13 of their own.
Freshman Brooke Billings (Clyde, Ohio) finished 3-for-3 with an RBI, while junior Lexi Majoy (Huron, Ohio) totaled two hits, including a double, and an RBI. Neely hit a home run and knocked in three runs.
Capital concludes its spring break trip with games Friday against Wartburg (Iowa) at 9 a.m. and Alma (Mich.) at 11 a.m. The Crusaders fell against Alma 6-0 on Monday.
