Capital University senior Devan Boggs and sophomore Brooke Billings swept the Ohio Athletic Conference Softball Player of the Week awards for the week ending March 24, the conference announced Tuesday, March 26.
Boggs, a shortstop from West Jefferson, Ohio, was named OAC Hitter of the Week, while Billings, a pitcher from Clyde, Ohio, earned her second OAC Pitcher of the Week honor of the season. Both players helped the Crusaders (9-5 overall, 2-0 OAC) sweep Heidelberg in a pair of games last Saturday in Tiffin.
In Capital's 3-1 victory over the 'Berg in Game 1, Boggs hit for the cycle – posting a single, double, triple and home run – for the second time in her career. She finished 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in.
Boggs' seventh-inning, solo home run added a crucial insurance run for Billings, who allowed just one unearned run in the complete-game victory. Billings surrendered just two hits and a pair of walks while striking out three in seven innings on the mound.
In the second game, a 7-5 Crusader win, Boggs was 2-for-4 with a homer, her third of the year. She extended her hitting streak to 10 games and now has two or more hits in five of her last six contests.
Billings entered the game for starter Alyssa Patznick in the bottom of the sixth and helped manage a bases-loaded, no-out jam. She allowed one run in her two innings of relief and picked up the win, her team-leading fifth of the season, after the Crusaders plated two runs in the top of the seventh to break a 5-5 tie.
Billings also garnered Pitcher of the Week accolades on March 5 after recording a 3-1 record and a save in seven appearances over the team's annual spring break trip to Florida.
Boggs last earned Hitter of the Week honors on April 2, 2012, after batting .647 and leading Capital to a 5-0 record the previous week.
Each week, OAC coaches and sports information directors nominate student-athletes for each sport in season for the award.
