Senior Devan Boggs of the Capital University softball team has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division III Softball first team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization announced Tuesday, May 21.
Boggs, a shortstop from West Jefferson, Ohio, graduated two weeks ago with a degree in exercise science/pre-physical therapy. She maintained a 3.53 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale and was eligible for All-America status after earning first team All-District merits for the second straight season.
The 2013 Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Boggs led the Crusaders to their first OAC regular season championship and appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament since 2002. She earned first team All-OAC and NFCA All-Region honors for the third consecutive year and NFCA All-America accolades for the second straight campaign, garnering first team recognition this season after being named to the third team in 2012.
One of just four players from the conference to be picked an Academic All-American, Boggs finished her standout four-year career with her finest campaign. She led the team and the conference in runs (50), hits (81), triples (5), home runs (14), runs batted in (53) and slugging percentage (.898). Boggs also paced the team with a .488 batting average and 16 doubles, ending her career as the league's career leader in two-base hits and the program's leader in hits, doubles and home runs.
Boggs was also rewarded for her efforts on and off the field on campus. She was one of two representatives from Capital to earn an OAC Clyde Lamb Award for academic and athletic excellence, and was the institution's William F. Bernlohr Award winner for achievement in athletics and scholarship, as well as responsibility, leadership and religious principles. Boggs was also a member of the school's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
John Carroll's Mackenzie Griffin was selected Capital One Division III Academic All-America of the Year for softball.
