Capital University senior Emily Sheets wrapped up her standout, four-year career Thursday with a 20th place finish in the discus throw at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in La Crosse, Wis.
Senior Emma McCarron (Mansfield, Ohio) also competed for the Crusaders, advancing to Saturday's 3,000-meter steeplechase finals after placing 10th in Thursday's preliminary race with a school-record time of 10:46.39, nearly 15 seconds better than her previous top mark.
Entering the meet with the nation's No. 22 throw in the discus, Sheets moved up two spots with a toss of 129-07. She was unable to reach the final round after fouling on her last two throws.
Sheets reached the NCAA Championships after posting a school-record mark of 139-08 at the Augustana (Ill.) Twilight last week. The 2013 Ohio Athletic Conference women's discus outdoor champion, Sheets concludes her Capital career with three school outdoor records (discus, high jump, javelin throw), two indoor top marks (high jump, pentathlon) and the 2011 OAC Field Athlete of the Meet award following her high jump title at the conference outdoor championships.
Saturday's women's steeplechase final is set for 2:45 p.m. EST. McCarron entered the championships with the nation's 16th-best time. With a top-eight finish Saturday, McCarron would become the seventh women's All-American in school history.
