Capital University senior Emma McCarron became the seventh All-American in women's track and field program history Saturday by placing seventh in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in La Crosse, Wis.

McCarron, a native of Mansfield, Ohio, finished the race in a school-record time of 10:39.93, just over three seconds out of sixth and 22 seconds behind national champion Alyssa Smith of Geneseo State (N.Y.). She is the first distance runner in school history to finish among the nation's top eight in a women's track and field event.

A two-time NCAA Cross Country Championship qualifier, McCarron reached the outdoor track and field national meet after recording Division III's No. 16 time of 11:00.68 at North Central (Ill.) last week. She qualified for Saturday's final with a then-school-record mark of 10:46.39 in Thursday's preliminaries, getting the 10th-best time among the field of 22 student-athletes.

McCarron is a three-time Ohio Athletic Conference champion in indoor distance events, including two titles in the 1-mile run and one in the 3,000-meter run. She finished second in the steeplechase at last month's OAC Outdoor Championships to John Carroll's Emily Mapes, who placed ninth at the NCAAs Saturday. McCarron finishes her career as the school record holder in seven individual events, including three outdoor races, and one indoor relay.

McCarron was joined at the NCAA meet by classmate Emily Sheets (Gahanna, Ohio), who placed 20th in Thursday's discus throw.
