Second-Half Surge Sends Capital to Third Straight Win

The Capital University women's basketball team posted yet another solid defensive effort Wednesday night, holding Heidelberg to just 30.4 percent shooting in a 62-57 victory in Ohio Athletic Conference action in Tiffin, Ohio.

Junior Stacy Timmerman (New Bremen, Ohio; lower right) scored 12 of her game-high 18 points in the first half to lead the Crusaders (11-5 overall, 6-3 OAC), who have now won three straight and six of their last seven games as they enter the second half of conference play.

Capital put together a strong second-half performance, surging to an 18-point lead before holding off the 'Berg (4-12, 1-8), who rallied in the closing minutes.

"It was an extremely physical road game," Capital coach Dixie Jeffers said. "Our kids played hard and played through every obstacle thrown at them. We are feeling good about this win."

Senior Shalena Hawkins (Cincinnati, Ohio) added her fifth double-double of the year with 11 points and 16 rebounds, while classmate Hilary Kuhns (Fairfield, Ohio) and sophomore Cookie Geroski (Fostoria, Ohio) recorded 10 points apiece.

The Crusaders shot just 33.3 percent (20-for-60) from the floor but knocked down 20-of-27 from the free throw line, compared to 7-of-11 for Heidelberg.

Capital led 16-10 just over midway through the first half after a lay-up by Timmerman, and took its largest lead of the half at the 4:13 mark when a 3-pointer by Geroski made it a 27-18 advantage.

The Crusaders extended their halftime lead early in the second, taking a 43-30 lead with 13:51 on the clock after four straight free throws by sophomore Jamie Caton (Hilliard, Ohio). Capital took its largest lead of the game at 51-33 following a lay-up by Hawkins with 10:56 to play.

The 'Berg narrowed its deficit to single-digits by the 2-minute mark and trailed by just five with 36 seconds to play. The Crusaders held strong and sealed their win thanks to 6-of-6 free throw shooting over the final half-minute of the contest.

"We changed up our defenses and controlled the boards (to get out to the big lead)," Jeffers said. "We made a few bad decisions down the stretch, but really overcame a lot of adversity."

The Crusaders return to action this Saturday at John Carroll. Game time is slated for 3 p.m. in University Heights, Ohio.
