Crusaders Suffer First Setback of Season

The Capital University women's basketball team was unable to capture its fifth straight win to open the season Sunday, falling 59-42 against Maryville (Tenn.) on the second day of the Thomas More Julie Costello Memorial Classic in Crestview Hills, Ky.

The Crusaders split a pair of games in the tournament, with their win coming Saturday against No. 17 Thomas More. Following play, senior Shalena Hawkins (Cincinnati, Ohio; at right) was named to the All-Tournament team.

After shooting 52.9 percent in the first half, Capital (4-1) cooled to 13.3 percent in the second, offsetting a solid defensive performance in which it forced 25 Maryville turnovers.

Hawkins led the Crusaders with 10 points to go along with three steals. Juniors Stacy Timmerman (New Bremen, Ohio) and Rebekah Will (Millbury, Ohio) each added eight points.

The two teams played evenly through the first 10 minutes until the Scots (2-2) made a quick 9-0 run to take a 22-14 advantage with 7:54 to play in the half. Capital cut its deficit to 26-24 thanks to a jumper by sophomore Jamie Caton (Hilliard, Ohio) at the 1:43 mark before Maryville converted on two of its last three possessions to take a 30-24 halftime lead.

The Scots pushed their lead to 16 with 15 minutes left in the second half and never looked back. The Crusaders, who played five games in the last 10 days, couldn't get going offensively, converting four field goal attempts and 10 free throws in the frame.

Caton posted seven points to lead all Capital reserves.

The Crusaders return to play this Wednesday at Wilmington in their Ohio Athletic Conference opener. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. in Wilmington, Ohio.
