Crusaders’ Winning Streak Snapped Against No. 10 Purple Raiders

COLUMBUS – The Capital women's basketball team was unable to upset the No. 10 Mount Union Purple Raiders on Saturday afternoon as it fell to the first-place Ohio Athletic Conference opponent 66-57 at the Capital Center. The loss snapped Capital's five-game winning streak.

The Crusaders (13-6, 8-4 OAC) were able to get within six points of the Raiders' (18-1, 11-1) lead at the two-minute mark of the second half, but the host team could not overcome its deficit. The Crusaders were unable to convert a 3-pointer (0-of-5) but had a successful afternoon at the free throw line (15-of-18).

Senior Shalena Hawkins (Cincinnati, Ohio; at right) led Capital in scoring with a double-double by contributing a team-high 16 points and 10 rebounds. Capital's Stacy Timmerman (New Bremen, Ohio)  scored 14 points and tallied five rebounds and one assist.

Prior to Saturday's contest, Mount Union was ranked No. 10 in both the USA Today/ESPN Coaches and the D3hoops.com Top 25 Polls. The victory against Capital extends the Purple Raiders' winning streak to 13 games.

After Capital opened the first half by missing their first seven shots, the team was able to regain their composure to tie Mount Union at 7-7 after a jump shot by Hawkins.

Capital had its one and only lead of the game after Jamie Caton rebounded her own missed shot and converted a lay-up to give Capital a 19-18 advantage at the 5:46 minute mark of the first half.

Mount Union closed the first half with a 6-2 run and led Capital 25-21. The Crusaders missed key opportunities in the first period by committing eight turnovers, which were mostly due to Mount Union's backcourt defensive pressure.

The Raiders stormed out with a 14-4 run to open the second period to lead 39-25 with the hopes of diminishing any chance of a Capital victory.

But Capital was not overwhelmed by the large deficit, getting within three at the 9-minute mark of the second half after Rebekah Will's two free throws shortened Mount Union's lead to 50-47.

Hawkins' lay-up at the two-minute mark put her team within six points of the lead, but the Crusaders were unable to overcome the deficit.

The Crusaders' next opponent will be Ohio Northern at Ada, Ohio, on Wednesday, Feb. 1, at 7:30 p.m.
