The Capital University women's basketball team was unable to overcome a double-digit first-half deficit Saturday, suffering a 57-50 setback at Baldwin-Wallace in an Ohio Athletic Conference affair at Berea, Ohio.
Senior Shalena Hawkins (Cincinnati, Ohio; at right) finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season to lead the Crusaders, who shot 33.9 percent from the field and just 8-of-15 from the free throw line.
"We came out a little flat, and never quite got in sync," Capital coach Dixie Jeffers said. "I thought we had some individuals play well, but as a team we never got on track."
The Yellow Jackets (9-5 overall, 4-3 OAC) turned a one-point deficit at the 3-minute mark of the first half into a 35-25 halftime advantage. The 13-2 run proved to be the difference in the game as Capital, which held B-W to 24 percent shooting in the period, trailed for the remainder, struggling to gain any momentum offensively.
The Crusaders (8-5, 3-3) made it a one-possession game at 47-44 thanks to a tip-in by Hawkins with 4:55 to play. After Baldwin-Wallace answered with a jumper, the two teams trade points the rest of the way and the Yellow Jackets knocked down 4-of-6 from the free throw line in the final minute to seal the contest.
"We had some opportunities to take control (of the game) or take the lead, but we didn't seize those opportunities," Jeffers said.
Capital forced 17 turnovers, scoring 17 points off Baldwin-Wallace miscues, and converted 16 second-chance points.
Senior Hilary Kuhns (Fairfield, Ohio) and junior Stacy Timmerman (New Bremen, Ohio) contributed with 11 points apiece, while junior Rebekah Will (Millbury, Ohio) tallied six points, nine rebounds and four assists.
The Crusaders look to rebound in OAC play this Wednesday at Marietta. Tip-off is schedule for 7:30 p.m. in Marietta, Ohio.
