Update (11:22 p.m. EST): The team has arrived safely in Detroit, and is now on its way to Columbus via bus. Sadly, the medical kit, which was lost on the first day of the trip, is believed to be sitting in Newark.
NEWARK, N.J. – The Capital University women's basketball team is scheduled to return home early Monday morning after a full day of flying. With a long layover at Newark Liberty International Airport (and a reliable Internet connection), here's a look at the team's Italy Tour "by the numbers."
3
Number of games the team played. The Crusaders soundly beat IES Pisa 63-48 in their second game of the trip and were defeated 77-62 at Athena (Thursday) and 67-64 at Marghera on June 2.
4
Gondolas ridden by our travel party in Venice on the fourth day. We spent a full day in the city, eating and shopping as we navigated the narrow streets and, riding in the gondolas, the slender canals.
5,00
Approximate number of Euros spent, per person, paying to go to the bathroom in public places during the trip. I think the women on this trip would say the "water closets," as they're referred to, aren't worth paying for.
9
By my count, number of jobs our guide, Andrea, performed while on the trip. In addition to being our fantastic tour guide, he also played roles of waiter, singer, songwriter, Internet broadcast producer, public address announcer, translator, businessman and accountant.
11
Number of Italian cities visited on our journey: Milan, Jesolo, Verona, Venice, Pisa, Florence, Lucca, Orvieto, (Lake) Bolsena, Rome and Vatican City (the Vatican is its own nation).
13
Hours spent in Newark Airport by assistant coach Jason Wright on the second leg of his trip to Italy (he traveled separately two days after the rest of the travel party departed). There was one specific airline that, suffice it to say, won't be receiving business from a few customers in Columbus any time soon.
15.0
Points averaged by graduated senior Shalena Hawkins, in three games on the trip. Hawkins also led the team in rebounding (9.7 per game) over that span. Senior Rebekah Will was also in double digit scoring, putting up 12.7 per contest.
16
Over/under on number of miles walked on the trip.
20
Another over/under, this time on number of times the members of our travel party used the phrase "When in Rome…" when we were in the Italian capital. Loved it.
21
Number of people in our travel party, out of 21, who enjoyed the experience of a lifetime.
