Women’s Basketball This Week: Capital Continues Road Stretch

Following a pair of road wins last week, the Capital University women's basketball team looks to maintain its success away from the Capital Center with two more Ohio Athletic Conference away contests in the next seven days.

The Crusaders (12-5 overall, 7-3 OAC), who currently stand in fourth place in the conference (three games behind first-place Ohio Northern), visit Heidelberg on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. before a showdown at No. 25 Mount Union on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Saturday's game in Alliance, Ohio, will be televised on tape delay by SportsTime Ohio and will be broadcast on Sunday at 12 p.m.

Last Wednesday, Capital kicked off its four-game road swing with a 67-56 victory at Marietta, the team's 49th consecutive triumph over the Pioneers. Senior forward Stacy Timmerman (New Bremen, Ohio) led the Crusaders with a career-high 29 points on 9-of-15 shooting and an 11-for-11 performance at the free throw line. Capital trailed 37-28 after one half of play but whittled away at the deficit before taking the lead for good with just over nine minutes to play in the contest.

Three days later, the Crusaders completed a season-sweep of Baldwin Wallace with a solid 70-55 win in Berea. Capital shot 49.2 percent from the floor, including a 54.8 percent clip in the second half, while holding the Yellow Jackets to 35.1 percent from the field. Timmerman inched closer to the 1,000-career point mark with a game-high 20 points (15 in the second half) and eight rebounds. She is now just 62 points shy of the milestone.

Junior guard Cookie Geroski (Fostoria, Ohio) continued her strong play with 15 points, while freshman guard Simonne Gage (Dayton, Ohio; at right) shot 6-of-7 from the floor to finish with 14 points. The Crusaders pulled away late in the second half, taking a 10-point lead with 3:20 to play. Capital took advantage of 16 Baldwin Wallace turnovers with 15 points off the miscues.

Heidelberg (5-12, 1-9) suffered its seventh straight setback on Saturday in a 96-85 defeat at Mount Union. Kathleen Phillips led all scorers with 29 points to go along with six rebounds, five assists and four steals for the 'Berg, which knocked down 14-of-23 (60.9 percent) from 3-point range but surrendered 19 three-pointers on the other end.

Phillips currently leads the conference in scoring, averaging 19.1 points per contest entering Wednesday's game. Paige Ricketts is the team's second-leading scorer at 9.5 points per game and a team-best 6.4 rebounds per affair. The 'Berg ranks eighth in the league in scoring offense (62.9 ppg) and 10th in scoring defense (68.8), and is second in the OAC with just over seven 3-pointers made per game.

The Crusaders earned a 76-43 victory over Heidelberg on Dec. 5, outrebounding the 'Berg 49-28 and shooting 48.4 percent in the contest. Timmerman, Geroski and Gage all scored in double figures for Capital, which hasn't lost against Heidelberg since the 2007-08 season.

The Crusaders handed Mount Union (14-3, 8-2) its first loss of the season back on Dec. 22 when the Purple Raiders were ranked No. 2 in the nation by D3hoops.com. Capital held a 12-point lead in the second half and hung on for a 59-57 triumph at the Capital Center. Junior forward Jamie Caton (Hilliard, Ohio) contributed with 18 points, seven rebounds and a clutch block in the waning moments as Mount Union looked to tie the game.

The Purple Raiders, who enter the week tied for second in the league with Otterbein, knocked down 19 three-pointers en route to their fourth-straight win, a 96-85 triumph over Heidelberg. Amanda Turner hit eight 3s for a team-high 26 points, while Rosa Lamattina added 21 points, 10 assists and six steals to the winning effort.

Mount Union, which travels to John Carroll on Wednesday prior to hosting the Crusaders, ranks second in the league in scoring offense (71.1 ppg) and fourth in scoring defense (60.7). The Purple Raiders sit atop the league in 3-pointers made, 3-point percentage and assists. Lamattina ranks third in the OAC with 17.1 points per game while five other players average between six and nine points.
