Women’s Basketball This Week: Timmerman on Brink of Milestone

The Capital University women's basketball team wraps up the home portion of its regular season schedule and visits its cross-town rival this week.

The Crusaders (13-8 overall, 8-6 Ohio Athletic Conference) host Marietta on Wednesday at 7:30 before visiting Otterbein on Saturday for a 5 p.m. contest.

Capital seniors Rebekah Will (Millbury, Ohio) and Stacy Timmerman (New Bremen, Ohio) will be recognized prior to Wednesday's contest, their final regular season home game in purple and white. Timmerman is just three points shy of becoming the 19th player in program history to reach 1,000 for her career.

Saturday's affair is the first half of a women's-men's doubleheader against the Cardinals.

The Crusaders, who enter the week in fifth place in the OAC standings, suffered a pair of losses last week by a combined nine-point margin.

On Wednesday, Capital fought back from a double-digit, second-half deficit but fell short in a 66-60 defeat against Wilmington at the Capital Center. Trailing by 13 with just over 12 minutes to play, the Crusaders slowly grinded away and, after seven straight points by freshman guard Simonne Gage (Dayton, Ohio) and a 3-pointer by junior guard Cookie Geroski (Fostoria, Ohio), took a 57-56 advantage with 3:10 on the clock.

The Quakers responded with a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession and wouldn't relinquish the lead from there, knocking down 7-of-8 free throws in the final 1:08 of the contest. Geroski finished with a game-high 18 points along with nine rebounds, while Gage scored all 14 of her points in the second period. Timmerman posted 12 points and 10 rebounds (eight offensive).

For the second straight game, Capital made a late second-half push after trailing by double digits earlier in the frame, but came up shy again in a 77-74 loss at John Carroll on Saturday. Geroski posted a team-best 18 points, including a 3-pointer with 18 seconds left to squeeze the margin down to three. The Blue Streaks then knocked in a free throw and then forced a turnover to seal the Crusaders' fate.

Timmerman contributed with 17 points, nine rebounds and four assists, while junior forward Jamie Caton (Hilliard, Ohio) recorded 14 points and four steals. John Carroll made 31-of-43 at the free throw line compared to 12-for-20 by Capital in the contest.

Marietta (7-14, 2-12) snapped an eight-game losing streak on Saturday with a 69-64 home win over Heidelberg. Tori Dixon scored 21 points to lead the Pioneers, who knocked down 21-of-29 at the free throw line. Candice Alexander added 15 points, 10 rebounds and three steals.

Dixon (10.3 points per game) and Alexander (10.0 ppg) lead Marietta for the season in scoring. Alexander leads the team in rebounding with 6.6 per contest, while Heather Booth adds 9.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. The Pioneers rank 10th in the league in scoring offense (57.9 ppg) and seventh in scoring defense (65.2 ppg).

On Jan. 16 at Marietta, Timmerman tallied a career-high 29 points and Geroski scored 15 of her 19 points in the second period to lead the Crusaders back from a nine-point halftime deficit to a 67-56 victory. It was Capital's 49th consecutive victory over the Pioneers.

Otterbein (16-5, 10-4) enters the week alone in third place in the OAC following a 62-56 setback at home against No. 19 Mount Union. The Cardinals shot 55.6 percent in the second half but the Purple Raiders made 13 three-pointers and grabbed 17 offensive rebounds. Hannah Day led Otterbein with 24 points and 10 rebounds.

Otterbein ranks fifth in the conference in scoring offense (64.8 ppg) and second in scoring defense (57.8) entering the week. The Cardinals are the league's top 3-point shooting team by percentage, knocking down 37.3 percent of their attempts. Day ranks fifth in the OAC in scoring (16.4 ppg) and tied for sixth in rebounding (6.9 rpg). Tabatha Piper also averages double-digit scoring (10.6 ppg) and ranks among league leaders in rebounding (6.7 rpg).

In the first game between the two teams this season, the Crusaders shot just 26.9 percent from the floor en route to a 64-39 home loss on Jan. 5. Day totaled 19 points and seven rebounds to lead the Cardinals, who knocked down 19-of-25 from the free throw line. Geroski and Timmerman scored 10 points apiece to lead Capital.
