2013 All-OAC Women's Basketball Teams and Special Awards
Capital University guard Simonne Gage was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Freshman of the Year and two other members of the team were selected all-conference, the league announced Wednesday, Feb. 27.
Gage, a native of Dayton, Ohio, is the first OAC Freshman of the Year in the program's storied history.
Junior guard Cookie Geroski (Fostoria, Ohio; at right) was selected to the second team, while senior forward Stacy Timmerman (New Bremen, Ohio) earned honorable mention accolades for the second time in her career. Geroski was an honorable mention honoree in 2012.
Gage infused the Capital backcourt with solid ball-handling, scoring, decision-making and defense right from the start of her career.
After being held out of the team's first three games due to injury, Gage scored in double figures in three of her first four games and averaged 7.4 points and 3.3 rebounds per game for the season. She made 18 starts in her 23 games played and posted a nearly 3-to-2 assist-to-turnover ratio with 59 assists, good for second on the team, against just 39 turnovers. Gage's 43 steals were second most on the team.
Geroski showed durability and endurance during the season, starting all 26 games and leading the team with 34.8 minutes per contest. She averaged 11.3 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, both good for second on the team. Geroski shot nearly 77 percent from the free throw line, knocked down 46 three-pointers and led the team with 69 assists against only 43 miscues.
Geroski's scoring average gradually rose as the conference season unfolded. In OAC play only, she finished in the top 10 in the league in 3-pointers made (30), total rebounds (118), steals (27) and points per game (11.8).
Timmerman (at left) closed her career after becoming the 19th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points. She closed her career with 1,085 points, good for 10th in program history.
Timmerman led the Crusaders and currently ranks in the top 10 in the conference in points per game (14.2), rebounds per game (6.5) and field goal percentage (46.1). She was tabbed OAC Player of the Week on Jan. 21 after leading Capital to a pair of wins with a pair of 20-plus point efforts, including a career-high 29 points at Marietta. Timmerman leads the league with 86 offensive rebounds.
Rosa LaMattina of Mount Union and Ohio Northern's Joanna Snyder were named Co-OAC Players of the Year. Michelle Durand was selected OAC Coach of the Year after leading ONU to the OAC regular season and tournament titles.
