The Capital University women's soccer team received a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award for the 2011-12 season, the organization announced late Thursday, Nov. 15.

The Crusaders, who also garnered the accolade in 2010-11, won the 2011 Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament championship and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.

The program experienced similar success in the classroom last academic year, recording a team grade point average of 3.37 on a 4.0 scale.

"I am very proud of our student-athletes for earning the NSCAA Team Academic Award for two consecutive years," Capital coach Chris Kouns said. "When I arrived two years ago, I shared a vision for the program that we would produce winners in the classroom, on the soccer field and in life.

"This award is yet another example of the validity of those core program values. We've won championships on the field, earned multiple awards in the classroom and our kids are tremendous human beings."

A total of 497 college women's teams in all divisions earned the Team Academic Award by virtue of averaging a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
