Reese's Division III College All-Star Game Live Video
Capital University men's basketball senior Spencer Niekamp became the school's seventh-ever All-American Thursday as the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) named him to the 2013 Coaches' Division III All-America second team.
Niekamp, a forward from St. Henry, Ohio, is the program's first All-American since 2009, when Nate Stahl was honored for the second consecutive season.
After helping lead the Crusaders to their second consecutive Ohio Athletic Conference regular season title, Niekamp was tabbed OAC Player of the Year, receiving first team all-conference accolades for the second straight year. He was later selected first team All-Great Lakes Region by D3hoops.com and first team All-District by the NABC.
Niekamp, who is also a three-time All-OAC Tournament pick and a two-time Academic All-OAC honoree, led Capital in scoring (15.3 points per game) and rebounding (5.5 rebounds per game) in 2012-13. He shot nearly 49 percent from the field and over 47 percent from 3-point range, which ranked among the top three in the league.
Niekamp was also the team's leading scorer in 2011-12, when the Crusaders shared the OAC regular season championship, claimed the conference tournament title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament after knocking off Randolph-Macon (Va.) in the first round at Wooster.
He concluded his Capital career with 1,288 points, good for 12th highest in program history.
After being selected in a fan vote, Niekamp will play for the West team at this Saturday's Reese's Division III College All-Star Game at the Salem Civic Center in Salem, Va. The contest, which features 18 of the nation's top players, begins at 3:30 p.m. EST and is a prelude to the NCAA Tournament semifinal games. Fans can follow the game live at the link above.
Niekamp is the lone OAC representative on the NABC's three All-America teams.
